Neurodiverse Affirming Counselling ADHD|Autism
Neurodiverse affirming counselling understands that we all have different ways of communicating, thinking, feeling and interacting with the world around us.
Affirming counselling works with the strengths of neurodiversity and understands that the world is often not designed for neurodiverse people.
Therefore, the problems neurodivergent people experience are not because of the person, but because of the systems that we rely on to support us to live a full and satisfying life.
Life is difficult, there’s more to manage than any one person can cope with. The world is becoming more and more complex and more and more demanding.
Of course it’s hard to focus and stay on top of everything
Are you on a journey to identify and understand your experiences of being neurodiverse? Some clients begin with a sense that there has always been ‘something different’ about the way they think and feel. Many people have family and friends who have been diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, and they are now questioning if they also might fit in the ‘Neurodiverse’ space.
Do you sometimes feel that it’s difficult to begin a conversation about or to ask questions about ADHD & Autism?
Would you like more information to help you make a decision about assessment?
Though Mental Health Social Workers do not offer diagnosis, Golden Point Counselling is passionate about working with the neurodiverse community and offers therapy that runs alongside the clinical diagnostic process to provide empathy, skills and coaching to support what is often a difficult journey to navigate.
Many clients will see a separate professional for the diagnosis then return to counselling to continue their therapeutic journey towards self-validation and compassion, understanding and processing what they have learned. Affirming counselling can help you work towards developing healthy coping and management strategies to live a more fulfilling ‘neurodivergent’ life.
Not everyone seeks a diagnosis or wants a label, but they may feel that ADHD and Autism somehow explains some of their experiences. And therefore, it can be helpful to have an honest and open conversation to find out more and move forward.
It is true that there are a lot of conversations in the media and in our community about being Autistic an ADHDer and AuDHDer, and this can be confusing and present many questions. But it is better to be open and talk about these things rather than carrying shame or not listening to our own needs.
